Nutrition Strategies for the Holidays
With the holidays around the corner, you’re probably tempted to splurge on the wonderful delicacies laid out on the table spread, and well, we don’t blame you! The holiday season is the most joyful time of the year. You get plenty of opportunities to savor some amazing food, but one can’t deny that you can easily pick up some unhealthy eating habits over the holidays.
So, if you’re looking to enjoy the holiday festivities without compromising on your health, here are some nutrition strategies for the holidays.
Don’t STARVE Before a Holiday Party
Most people tend to skip meals before a party or gathering thinking that they are saving calories prior to events, which isn’t a smart idea! This often ends up backfiring, leading to overeating due to intense feelings of hunger. Make sure to have a filling, healthy snack to curb your appetite and prevent overeating before a holiday party.
Cook a Healthy Dish and bring it to a potluck
If you’ve been invited to a potluck, make sure that you cook a healthy and nutritious dish. This way, you won’t have to rely on other unhealthy food options.
Choose Your Food Splurges Wisely
There are many dishes that are holiday favorites. Always scan the dinner table to choose these favorites for some delicious splurging rather than opting for foods that are available any other day of the year. Focus on filling up your plate with 2 – 3 nutritious food instead of sampling a bit of everything.
Be Mindful of What You’re Drinking
Set a drink limit!!! The holidays are a call for celebration, which includes lots of drinking. Not only do you need to pay attention to what you eat, but also to what you drink. Opt for calorie-free or low-calorie drinks, such as water, seltzer, or tea. Moreover, if you do choose to drink alcohol, make sure to do so in moderation.
Eat Until You Are Satisfied, Not Stuffed
This doesn’t only apply to the holidays, but to the rest of the year as well. Avoid overeating, chew your meal slowly and appreciate its flavor and taste, while keeping a check on your fullness levels. Very often, people get carried away and overeat when they see lots of yummy food - don’t do that! Be mindful of what and how much you’re eating.
You can’t control everything. So, when you do see the tempting holiday spread and ‘accidentally’ overindulge, don’t beat yourself up. Just ensure that the next meal you consume is a healthy one!
