(Me)aningful Mornings
Morning Routine
Why Bother?
Are you constantly in a rush every morning? Now that we are in this pandemic, do you wake up and just jump right into work without a morning routine?
One important SELF CARE routine is to create a Meaningful Morning Routine. It can be so simple but yet not everyone has one because we think that “I barely have enough time in the morning, so why bother creating an additional routine?”
The word (ME)aningful has a ME in it. Most of the time, we are rushing and forget how important it is to put ME at first!
Here’s my TOP 4 Reasons why you NEED to create a Morning routine.
1.You will be more PRODUCTIVE
The morning routine helps us set the tone for the day, we can set our intentions, control our schedules rather than letting our schedule controlling us. By creating a morning routine, we are focusing on what is currently the most important thing right in front of us and we can better prioritizing our time instead of the never ending to-do list.
Being productive doesn’t mean that we have to complete 10 different things at once. It can be the level of quality that we took to complete each task. Finishing the day with 3 COMPLETED tasks that we feel proud is better than 10 uncompleted tasks.
2 . Reduces Stress
Starting your morning with a routine you love will reduce your stress. You don’t have to spend time thinking about what you need to do in the morning. Think about this, when you wake up, you will automatically brush your teeth without feeling stress.
I know it is difficult now if you don’t have a morning routine. But the more specific you are, the more natural and automatic it will be.
3. Less Forgetful
Did you remember that time when you rush to work and noticed you forget something? Let me tell you one of my story.
One day, I woke up earlier than before, without a morning routine, I jump right into shower and change to get to work. I hop onto a Citi Bike to work, 20 mins into my ride, I noticed I forgot my laptop at home and I got to turn back. And the entire journey took more than an hour. I am lucky that my work hours are flexible so by the time I sat down at my desk, it was already 2 hours later than my normal arrival time and I was sweating. If I could wake up 30 mins earlier and had not rush, I will probably noticed that.
4. GAIN TIME
I know this might not make sense but you will actually gain more time by creating a morning routine. By setting your intention every morning, you can schedule ahead of your day and know what needs to be done and will not WASTE TIME on things are not on your list.
How do you create a morning routine?
Morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as short as 5 mins. Here’s some tips on how to start creating a MEANINGFUL MORNING.
Wake up earlier (let’s start your day 1 by waking up 5 minutes earlier than usual)
Don’t reach for your phone right away. Drink a glass of water or maybe get some light workout/stretches
Find something you LOVE to do and set an intention for the day
Meditate in the morning - get some alone and quiet time for yourself before your busy schedule ahead
Allow some changes in your routine to allow you to adapt to this new changes.
Sleep for at least 7-9 hours per day
Remember not to beat yourself up if you fail. Try again the next day!
Here’s an example of my 30 mins morning routine.
Meditate 15-20 mins
Set intentions for the day - 3 tasks that I will be focusing TODAY
Make myself a cup of TEA
THAT’S IT! It’s that simple! Some people love to workout in the morning but that’s not me! So if that’s not you, that is totally OK! I get my movement after work since that’s when I needed the most energy. Working out in the evening made me feel more energized and I am able to continue my day.
